Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to the most frequently asked questions
What will I need to bring with me on my first lesson?
You will need to bring your photo licence or your paper licence and another form of ID for the old style paper licences such as a passport. Also you will need prescription glasses if you have them and comfortable footwear, not flip flops high heels or heavy boots.
Do you do automatic driving lessons?
Yes, we do have automatic lessons available in certain areas, please call us to enquire early booking is advised.
Do you do intensive driving courses?
Yes we do Intensive driving courses in most areas please call to enquire.
How long are the driving lessons?
Driving lessons can be booked for 1 or 2 hours with 2 hour lessons being the norm (and most productive) lesson duration. Two hour driving lessons allow the pupil adequate practise time around the test areas and boost the learning process.
Can I choose my lesson time?
Yes of course you can. You can choose the lesson start time and duration to suit your own schedule. Driving lesson rates are charged at the same rate for evenings and weekends.
How much notice is required to book a lesson?
We have driving instructors throughout kent so usually we can book a driving lesson with as little as 48 hours notice although it can be more at busy times.
How many lessons will I need?
This really depends on a number of factors. The official DVSA answer is 40 to 60 hours in reality this can be a bit misleading. Few people pass in less than 40 hours unless they have their own car and practise with family or friends. It also depends on your ability to retain the information being taught. Age and circumstances also play a great role in the ability to learn. The most important factor though is your willingness to learn.
Can I start my lessons before passing my theory test?
Yes you can start before passing your theory test. Our driving instructors can also help prepare you for your theory test within the practical training sessions.
Can I practise between lessons in my own car?
Yes, we recommend that you undertake private practise with a friend or relative in your own car. This can be extremely beneficial and can cut down on the amount of lessons you will need but, you should always check your insured and that you are ready to do this safely by speaking with your driving instructor first.
Who can accompany me for practise in my own car?
Anyone can accompany you who is over 21 and has held a full UK (or full EC/EEA) licence for over three years.
Can I be collected from or dropped off at an address other than my home?
Within reason, all our instructors are happy to pick up from any local address and at the end of the lesson drop off somewhere else if you prefer. Please consult and agree with your instructor in good time to arrange pock up and drop off points.
Can I take my theory test before my 17th birthday?
You can only take your car theory test once your driving license becomes valid. This means that you can only take the test from your seventeenth birthday but it can be booked before that date.
What do I need to take with me for my theory test?
You will need to bring your photo licence, or your licence and another form of ID for the old style paper licences such as a passport. You will also need the letter the DVSA sent informing you of your test time. Don't forget - no licence, no test!
When should I book my driving test?
We always recommend that you speak to your driving instructor before booking the driving test. We also offer a free booking service for both the theory and practical driving test.
What do I need to take with me for my practical test?
You will need to bring your photo licence, or your licence and another form of ID for the old style paper licences such as a passport. You don’t forget - no licence, no test!!!
What is the average waiting time for a driving test?
The wait for a driving test at present is about 4 to 6 weeks in Gillingham. This varies from week to week and from test centre to test centre.
What test centre(s) can I use?
We use Gillingham, Maidstone, Herne Bay, Canterbury, Erith, and Belvedere test centres. Please consult with your instructor which test centre to book your test at.
Will I use this car for my test?
Yes you will use the car you learn to drive in for your test.
Do you offer a mock driving test?
Yes we offer a mock driving test to all pupils before booking their practical driving test. This gives the pupil a chance to experience a driving test without the risk of a fail.

I am looking to change driving schools. Can Topclass driving school help?
We often take on pupils from other driving schools. Please call us on our office number and we will arrange a lesson.
What is the optimum way to learn?
This varies from pupil to pupil. However, most people find a two-hour lesson every week to be the most beneficial way to learn.
What is the two year probationary period?
Up to two years after passing your test ALL penalty points accrued are doubled! This means only six points required to lose licence instead of twelve. If you are unfortunate enough to reach six points they will replace your licence with an application form for a provisional licence. This means another theory test and another practical test - and who wants to do that?
