Mock Driving Test

As you come close to test standard your driving instructor may offer you a 'mock' driving test. This will be conducted by your own driving instructor. He/she will try to cover a similar route that you may get on your real practical driving test. You will be assessed using the same DL25 marking sheet the DVSA examiner will use. This will help to give you an idea of what to expect on test day and will give you a better understanding of your strengths and weaknesses when you’re put under driving test conditions.

A lot of learner drivers take the DVSA practical driving test without previously taking a mock driving test. Although this isn’t essential, sitting a mock driving test with your driving instructor can greatly improve your odds of passing the real driving test exam.

A mock driving test gives your driving instructor a chance to recognize any areas of your driving that may need improving before you take the DVSA practical driving test.

As you achieve a good level of ability and skill in driving and are close to driving test standard, taking a mock driving test is helpful to you. It is much cheaper for you to fail a mock driving test and not the real one. Failing the real DVSA driving test will involve another driving test booking fee currently £62.00 and also booking further driving lessons normally between another 4 to 8 hours, as there is also the test waiting times to take into consideration these can be anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks.

Our Advice

The day of your practical driving test is one of the most exciting days of your life. It’s the day that you’re assessed on all the training, hard work, and preparation both you and your driving instructor have put in, and the day you can gain your full driving licence.

There will always be some nerves which are natural on test day, but far too many learner drivers use this as an excuse for lack of preparation.

During your driving lessons, you should be receiving regular feedback on your progress and you will know when you are ready for your practical driving test when you can regularly drive during your driving lessons without making more than a couple of errors. If you can, there is no reason why you couldn’t repeat this on your practical driving test. If you find that you still feel uncomfortable or are making frequent mistakes during your driving lessons, then it’s more than likely that this will also happen on your test day and this is what causes the nerves and in most cases a driving test fail.

Our advice is continually self assess your performance and be honest with  yourself during lessons, always listen to the advice of your driving instructor who has considerable experience in judging when you are or will ready for your test.  If all pupils took the advice of their driving instructor before attending the practical driving test the driving test pass rate would probably rise to around 80% – 90%. Far too many learner drivers arrive at the driving test centre underprepared and that’s the main reason why the average 1st time pass rate in our local test centres is less than 50%.
